What Will I Learn

This course contains the following elements which are set in a broad based art context:

v     Fine Art (Drawing and Painting)

v     Graphic Design

v     Three Dimensional Design

v     Textiles

Research is a key element of the course and for students who wish to continue art studies into further education this course gives excellent preparation.  For students who choose art out of interest, the course will provide opportunities to develop the skills of handling materials, solving problems and developing research skills as well as broadening general knowledge of the world around us.

You will be taught about different cultures, artists and crafts people in order to develop a greater understanding of Art and Design and its context in the world.  The course is initially prescriptive but encourages students to become independent learners and guides them into making personal choices about their areas of study.

Art is essentially a practical subject, but one which requires coursework to be completed and researched in students’ own time.

How Will I Be Assessed

Assessment is continuous and students need to produce between two or three units of work.. In addition there is a controlled test in the final year of the course which lasts for ten hours after which students’ work is exhibited. Students receive intermittent assessments throughout the course which indicates levels, target grades, strengths and areas for improvement.

60% coursework, 40% exam

Future Opportunities

The GCSE Art and Design course is suitable for all students regardless of career choice as it promotes personal development. However it should be considered a
must for anyone considering a design based career (including retail, hairdressing, engineering, beauty consultancy, media, television and advertising to name but a few).

Anything Else Need To Know

Homework plays a vital part in the completion of the course and students must be prepared to undertake at least one hour of homework per week.  GCSE Art and Design is an interesting and valued course which alongside any subject area will help to provide a well rounded curriculum for any student.
