Description

At Wakefield College students have the opportunity to use the specialist facilities to study Animal Care. The Animal Care teaching team members are experts in a variety of fields including veterinary nursing, care of exotic species, animal breeding, animal science and conservation. We have a permanent collection of exotic and mammalian species at the Wakefield Campus and a number of breeding programmes planned. Our partnership with Askham Bryan College (York) enables our students to have access to additional species and facilities available at this nearby specialist agricultural college.

What will I Learn?

The course consists of units in:

Animal Industry and Organisations

This will give students an understanding and awareness of different businesses and organisations.

Industry Experience

All students have the opportunity to carry out work experience. An externally marked Integrated Vocational Assignment is a compulsory part of the qualification.

Animal Care

Studies the housing, nutrition, grooming and handling of a range of animals.

Animal Health

This specialist unit introduces students to the maintenance of animal health and first aid.

Care of Exotics

Develops practical competence in caring for a range of exotic species.

Introduction to Biology

Studies basic concepts in Biology and provides the underpinning science needed by students wishing to progress onto the National Diploma.

All students receive comprehensive tutorial support and guidance.

What are the Entry Requirements?

Predicted A*-D at GCSE including English, or working at National Curriculum Level 5-6 at the end of KS3. Minimum Level 1 or equivalent Communications and Number Skills. A commitment to Animal Care would be beneficial.

How will I be Assessed

On completion, students receive a grade profile for each of the six units and an overall qualification grade of pass, merit or distinction.
