Description
The Access programme which is held at our Highfields Centre is a programme of modules designed specifically for students who wish to prepare for entry into Higher Education for professional training and Degree/Diploma Courses or a Foundation Course (in Art and Design). It provides an educational environment which is both sensitive and supportive to the needs and aspirations of adults returning to education. The range of subjects are extensive. In Art and Design we offer a range of 6 art subjects, and 3 core subjects, some of which can be offered individually or linked together to provide a more cohesive pathway through to further studies
What will I Learn?
Throughout the year, you will develop a wide variety of skills and techniques. By working on projects and assignments you will be able to gain an understanding of work practice, research and how to use workshops and staff effectively. What about the hours? Most sessions are between 9.30 and 12.30 pm or 1.30 and 4.30 pm. We try to offer sessions which finish early in the afternoon for those with children, where possible. If this is not possible, arrangements with individual staff can be made. Core Studies This consists of Directed Studies tutorial support and Study Skills (this enables students to develop practical study skills, use of library, written work, time management, etc). Core studies form a part of the course and support the practical and written elements of the programme. We also offer a language programme for students without GCSE English.
What are the Entry Requirements?
Applicants to be aged 19 or over and have the ability to work at level 2. Acceptance is based upon evidence of recent work, application form and interview.
How will I be Assessed
Assessment is done through marked assignments, course work, and a final exhibition in which all students take part.
What are the Costs?
As a full-time student you will not usually need to pay any course or examination fees (under 19). Just like any other college you will be expected to pay for some essential costs. There is a £35 bond to cover the cost of theatre visits and similar projects. Help may be available for students in financial difficulties. Please contact Student Support Services on 0500 162100.
Future Opportunities?
A student following an Access course and successfully completing will have a recommended qualification for Higher Education. However, an Art and Design student will also need a portfolio demonstrating a specialism and work to support his/her strengths in one area. Therefore, some students progress onto the Foundation course after the Access course.
Further Information
Most sessions are two hours long, your hours of study can be kept within the amount allowed by the Job Seekers Allowance and should not prevent you from fitting in with the requirements of this system.
